Good Morning! Good Evening! It might be a bright new week, but it’s only Day Four of the IWRY Fic Marathon, and do we have a real rollercoaster of a ride for you with today's story. It’s Taaroko’s To Bind A Soul .Lock the door, put the kettle on and make sure that you have something to cuddle.Authors need feedback like Angelus needs (insert obsession of choice here).Enjoy!Jo
Just finished reading To Bind A Soul. Taaroko, you don't disappoint. I love how canon was used as a basis for this plot. That was a great twist, and idea, sweetie. You took Buffy's emotions and sent them through the wringer. I think you tied up a lot of loose ends with this story. I like that. Well done on the solution too. (I'm trying not to give away spoilers here.)Thank you.Ares
Hehe, thanks and you're welcome. To be honest, I kind of love it when there are loose ends in canon. They're very inspiring.
What a great thought you had! I love when writers fill canon holes and you did an excellent job doing that here. Great concept and execution. The structure and pacing work really well to build the suspense and stretch the story out in a way a lot of fanfic writers aren't bothering to do anymore. It was nice to not just be told the set-up, but instead read actual scenes showing how they all ended up converging in Sunnydale. Good job :-)
Thanks! Plot holes in canon used to drive me crazy, but now I just use them as fanfiction starting points. I'm glad you liked the structure. For some reason, it really didn't work just going in chronological order. The pacing felt all wonky, so I scrambled it, and it seemed to flow much better.Edited at 2013-11-05 05:26 am (UTC)
I really enjoyed this one! I like the way you handled Riley here and the way you made everything work just beautifully. Fine job!Gabrielle
Thanks! I'm glad you mentioned Riley. I had a lot of fun with the scene in Huxley and the family background stuff. When I was outlining, it occurred to me that Riley doesn't seem like the only child type, so I gave him some siblings and surrounded him with military influence in his family.
Woah woah woah, I adored this!! The episode tie-in elements (fabulous head canon), Buffy's very real distress and the happy payoff nevertheless (!!!!!! I'm sure you can imagine the squees), plus the season four fix...all amazing. This was a great addition to the marathon. Thanks so much!
Hehe, thanks. Head canon is so much fun. I'm glad you liked the happy payoff, because lately I've gotten more into the angsty stuff, and sometimes it makes it hard not to see happy endings as fake.
I’m not sure where I should review this fic(I‘m new to this marathon). I hope the author gets to read these well deserved comments. This story was absolutely amazing. Everything was so well done. I love how the author handled Riley without bashing him and everything about souls was very interesting. I’m so glad I read this. *happy sigh*
You came to the right place! I'm the writer. I'm so glad you enjoyed the fic, and welcome to the IWRY marathon! I think bashing is a really crappy, lazy, petty way to deal with characters who get in the way of a ship, and Riley is a stand-up guy, so he definitely deserved better than that. I'm glad you liked the stuff about souls too. I had fun with that.
I loved this story, taaroko. It's fun playing around with souls, isn't it? For the writer, that is. :~)))) For the reader, well now... It really put me through the wringer for poor Angel. My heart was in my mouth for the last half of the story. And, I even had sympathy for Riley, so that was really well done. It was super. Loved it! Thanks for the read.Jo
What an amazing use of canon and explaining a thread left hanging....
This was wonderful! I love the plot and how you filled in the canon. I love the way you handled all the characters and their emotions as well. Angel was as self-sacrificing as always and I love that we see his terror; of course he's willing to sacrifice but it makes it feel so real to have him afraid. Because of course this is terrifying. Buffy too was lovely and I want to give her many hugs (but now she's got Angel so... :D ). Cordelia and Wesley were perfect; I think Cordelia had my favorite lines. Even Riley was very well-handled and a lot of the Riley headcanons here are things I've always thought (military background, siblings) and I really enjoyed him here. And a happy ending! I love it. Thank you for a fantastic story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It makes perfect sense to think the soul would have to come from somewhere, rather someone. I also believe the Powers wouldn't let him go.Oh, and I appreciate how you handled Riley. So many treat him like crap or have him act completely irrationally and cruel. I liked Riley, so I always appreciate reading someone who paints him in a good light. Thank you for that!Edited at 2013-11-12 07:22 pm (UTC)
Beautifully written! I enjoyed every word. And thank you for being kind to Riley.
I love this so much! I love that there's not some easy, breezy quickie fix to this... but that there IS a resolution and one that leads to a well-earned reward for our pair! Brava!!
Well, that was a really creative use of some loose threads! Like you, the little boy who had no soul bugged me, too. How could something like that possibly happen? Here you’ve given us a very plausible scenario, but what an exciting ride it was!Al of your character voices were spot-on, and Buffy’s distress was heartbreaking; Thankfully it all turned out okay, and its nice that something went right for Angel for once! Thanks for sharing with us.
